15 Fun Things To Do at Home When You Are Bored (Detach from Your Phone)
Do you frequently feel bored at home with nothing fun to do? Have you ever got yourself stuck in an infinite loop of combing through Facebook, browsing Instagram, watching Youtube videos and repeating again?
You want to break out of the cycle but there is nothing fun to do at home to fill the void.
The first step that we should do is to switch off or at least keep our phones and tablets away.
I increasingly find that even though we are consuming lots of information from our smartphones, it is actually the culprit for making us feel empty most of the time. Boredom breeds more boredom when we are just mindlessly surfing the web.
Here is a list of 27 Fun Things to Do at Home when you are bored. Make sure to disconnect yourself from your smartphone.
1. Read the entire Harry Potter Book Series
If you have not already read the entire Harry Potter Book Series, now is the time to start. It should be an item to check off your achievement checklist as Harry Potter is one of the best-selling series of all time. There must be a reason for its success, right? So how can we miss this and go through life without at least reading the books once?
2. Have fun with Origami
Origami is the Japanese art of Paper Folding. The objective is to transform a piece of square paper into a sculpture through various folding techniques.
It is fun and suitable as a group or individual activity at home. All you need are just pieces of square paper that can hold a fold.
If you want to be a little more professional, you can get origami papers from Amazon easily. They come in various different colors to add variety to your finished work
3. Clean up your home and discover Fun Forgotten “Treasures”
How long has it been since the last spring cleaning on your attic and garage? Do you have the habit of not throwing things away? If you like to keep things out of sight for that “one day” that you might use them, then you probably have either lots of trash or fun treasures at home.
I recently cleared up my store room. There were 2 fun elements in this activity that anyone can do at home.
Firstly, I was applying what I recently read in a book on minimalism called Goodbye, Things: The New Japanese Minimalism by Fumio Sasaki . I felt greatly relieved and much lighter mentally when I cleared out 50% of my store room.
Secondly, I found a complete set of Vintage Peanuts Encyclopedia which my Grandmother bought for me when I was young. My Grandmother had passed away for more than 20 years now. Seeing these gifts she left behind was a really sentimental moment.

4. Decorate Your Fridge with Magnets
The average person opens the fridge about 15-20 times a day. Decorating your fridge can be a fun thing to do at home when you are bored.
Here are some cute Fridge Magnets that you can actually have fun playing with.
Super Mario Magnets
This brings back lots of memories. You can have fun moving the bricks and pipes around to re-enact stages from the classic Super Mario Game.
Avengers Fridge Magnet Set of 12
With Avengers:Endgame screening right now in Apr of 2019, these items are sure to draw attention from your friends when they visit.
Star Wars Lego Magnet
There are many different sets available on Amazon. You get the best of both worlds if you are a Lego and a Star Wars lover.
5. Set up a Home Cinema Room
When you feel bored, one of the fun things to do at home is to embark on a new project.
I converted one of my rooms into a Home Cinema and it has the been major source of my entertainment. I have a home theater, arcade room, music room for relaxing right in my own home.
A decent Home Theater room can be set up for less than $3000 dollars. I have had absolutely no regrets as I have spent countless hours enjoying myself in this room.
6. Have Fun Playing Board Games at Home
When I was young in the 1980s, playing Monopoly was a pretty troublesome activity. No doubt the game is fun but the exchange of paper money slows the game down.
The Monopoly Ultimate Banking version improved upon this with digital money. Rules have also been changed to speed up the game.
It was only recently that I found that we can use digital money to play the game. The transfer of digital currency through the device is intrinsically fun as you watch your balance go up and down.
Risk is another one of my favorite board games. I like the strategic element of the game and it is fun to see your army expanding. Getting rewarded with a large army at the start of your turn when you manage to defend a whole continent is very satisfying.
Now, as a fan of both Risk and Game of Thrones, the Risk: Game of Thrones Edition is something fun to do when you are bored at home combining the best of both worlds.
7. Re-watch the Entire Game of Thrones Series
Now that you may be playing board games related to Game of Thrones (see previous point), it can also be a good time to refresh some of your Game of Thrones memory.
This activity is fun as a group, couple or individually at home.
8. Enjoy Hydrating Face Mask Together as a Couple
One of the fun things my wife likes to do for me at home is to help me with a hydrating face mask. She would put on a mask for herself first and then help me with it.
Then, we would both sit and relax in the living room, listen to relaxing music in the background while we enjoy each other’s company.
9. Decorate your Balcony with Plants
Your balcony may be one of the best places to innovate and start on a flower garden balcony project.
Transforming your balcony into one that is rich with greenery and refreshing to look at will be a good investment of time to kill boredom at home and have fun at the same time.
10. Make a Gift Card for Your Loved Ones
In this digital age, we often buy material things to express our love and appreciation for our loved ones. They themselves would probably like these material things anyway.
However, do take a step back to basics and make a surprise gift card for your loved ones. You will be surprised at how much fun you have finding words to express your love. The happy look on the recipients’ faces is well worth the trouble.
11. Cook A Meal
Go shopping and prepare a sumptuous dinner at home. The process of preparing and cooking in itself is enjoyable. Also, the rewarding scene after when you see the food being gobbled up with no left-overs.
12. Watch Cartoons from the 80s
The 80s-90s was the golden era for Cartoons. If you grew up in that era, you would probably remember how much fun you had at home watching cartoons such as Transformers, He-Man, G.I Joe and Ghostbusters. The list goes on.
If you had fun watching them growing up, why deprive the next generation that same pleasure.
You can watch old and new cartoons on streaming websites like Kisscartoon.
13. Get a Hobby – Like Toy Collecting
Cartoons in the 80s-90s were marketing tools for toys. Many of us would have some fond memories of how those toys gave as lots of fun at home when we were bored as kids.
The kids of the 80s have now grown up into working adults and have the purchasing power to buy back some of their childhood memories.
Here are some nostalgic toys that have been re-designed with today’s technology.
Masters of the Universe Classics He Man Figures
Transformers Masterpiece Toy Figures
14. Watch Anime/Read Manga
I find that cartoons are enjoyable for kids for it’s simple and straight forward plot points. Anime and Manga from Japan have some serious and complex plots for another form of enjoyment.
You can watch anime with English Subtitles from Kissanime. I highly recommend Naruto, Death Note, Goblin-Slayer and Dragon Ball Super.
Another relatively unknown anime is Guyver: The Bio-Boosted Armor. It is quite sad that this Anime and Manga has only a very small following, given its interesting character designs.
The author is actually a very rich individual who draws manga as a hobby and only when he feels like it. That is why I have been reading the Guyver manga since I was 10 and it has still not ended. I am 36 this year.
15. Jigsaw Puzzles are Fun!
I never liked Jigsaw puzzles when I was a kid as I did not have the patience for it. Now that I have grown older and accustomed to hectic work schedules, sitting down for hours finding pieces in the jigsaw puzzle to slow down the pace of life is actually fun for me.
For Jigsaw Puzzles, I would recommend Pintoo Jigsaw puzzles. Read more about my post on 7 Ways Jigsaw Puzzles Improved my Marriage.
Basically, these are high quality puzzles and what it means is that the pieces are so precisely engineered that each piece of puzzle produces a ‘click’ sound when you put them together.
The puzzles are held very firmly together due to the precision and perfect fit unlike other cheaper renditions. Also, the problem with other lower quality jigsaw puzzles, is that you may get some peeling off when you reposition certain pieces you have matched wrongly.
